Videographer filming a wedding

The Future of Wedding Videography

My Views

At this current moment in time, consumers have access to an amazing range of equipment. Companies such as Panasonic and Sony are bringing out equipment that has an extremely high quality for a great price (don’t worry, this isn’t sponsored, I just love their stuff), 4K quality is starting to become standard procedure for many cameras, 2018/2019 might be the year for full 4K, let’s wait and see though. More advanced technology such as Virtual Reality (VR) and 360 degree video is being seen more and more over social media and Drones are becoming more regulated. What does the future of Wedding Videography look like then?

Well, let us start with the easy one, the quality of video is definitely going to be one of the major changes in the future. In terms of general filming technology has gone from super 8mm film in a 4:3 aspect ratio all the way to super high quality RAW files in 16:9 wide screen. As videographers we are now seeing the jump in details, from 1080p to 4K, now you’ve probably read all about this before but just think that you might have to start upping your game soon if you’re not filming in 4K already and maybe even 6K in the years to come. Many consumer televisions are including 4K as standard; so customers, in the future, may start shopping around based on whether or not a videographer can film in 4K.

Some of us may have been thinking about this one for a while and whether it is going to take off, you guessed it: 360 degree video and Virtual Reality. The technology is there at the moment, but the demand doesn’t seem to be showing just yet. However, this may be something that changes in the future; much like 4K in the sense that consumer may only start to actively look for it in the future as oppose to now. We may see a trend of 360 Degree Virtual Reality Wedding Videos start to arise, it could be the next big thing!

Now on to the subject of drones, their popularity has soared (please do not pardon the pun) in the last 5 years. With their popularity they have become more heavily regulated, something that could be seen as a positive move that protects the safety of airplanes and their passengers. As breathtaking as drone shots can be, incidents of drones being in the wrong place at the wrong time are often making news headlines. This could lead to even heavier regulation than the rules already put in place by the Government. What does this mean for drones and Wedding Videography though? Costs could rise; by this I mean the not just the cost of licensing your drone but the cost for Brides and Grooms who want to hire a Videographer with a drone.
