Videography and Photography for E-Commerce DIY Brands

Todays title is somewhat specific but being niche is a good thing, right?

The Project

I want to talk about video and photo production for a brand we had the pleasure of working with earlier this year. The Brackit DIY range is a fantastic set of products covering everything from gaffer tape (very handy for us) to ratchet screwdrivers! We were tasked with capture the new range with video and photos during the same shoot day. The setting had to match the environment the tools and tape may be used in, an industrial space and stylistically moody. It sounded great to us!

We managed to get the whole range of tapes and new tools filmed and photographed in the day. The editing played a huge part in giving a look and feel to these tools, making sure they stood out from other e-commerce listings and made an impact on the viewer.

Takeaways

This gig for us confirmed the change in attitude towards video that companies are having; it is essential to have not just a video in your e-commerce listing, but one that will stand out among the sheer amount of different products a potential customer has access to on sites like Amazon and eBay.

Having video “tuned” to your branding requirements shows that you care about the impact you make, rather than the typical white infinite studio background (which does still have its uses in many cases), having an on location setting gives context to your products and more meaning.

Year upon year video has simply become the best way to communicate to people. The best way to engage someone in a matter of seconds. Your copy including features and benefits is still going to be essential to your product listing of e-commerce sites, but making sure you have a class set of videos is going to be a big factor as to whether people engage with your listing.

The bonus during this shoot was that we had one of our photographers who was there to capture lifestyle shots of the products in action, as we had a big studio space and all of the lighting available, why not take the perfect opportunity to get the most content out of the shoot? This also meant that the photos and video both followed the same style and branding guidelines, meaning that there is a consistency and cohesion when people see the DIY brand online, eyes won’t be jarred by two clashing styles.

So all in all, today was a quick blog for a big project with an important message, invest in your brand’s video and photos, they are two visual mediums that will hugely benefit your growth.
